How to buy a large amount of Bitcoin in Canada
Once a purchase runs into the tens of thousands of dollars, the way you buy matters as much as the price on the screen. Daily limits, slippage and how the Bitcoin is delivered all change the result. This guide compares the main routes for larger buyers in Canada.
TL;DR
- Big orders on an exchange cost more than they look (slippage) and hit daily limits.
- An OTC desk gives one price for the whole amount and sends the Bitcoin straight to your wallet.
- Have ready: photo ID, where the funds come from, and a wallet you control (ideally a hardware wallet).
- Next step: book a call with our OTC Desk.
Why big orders are different
On an exchange, a large market order can eat through several price levels in the order book, so the average price you pay ends up higher than the price you saw. This is called slippage. Most exchanges and e-Transfer services also cap how much you can deposit or buy per day, so a large purchase can take days and expose you to price moves in between.
Your three main options
- Exchange, in pieces. You split the order into smaller trades over hours or days. It works, but you carry the price risk and the admin.
- OTC desk. An over-the-counter desk quotes one price for the whole amount, settles it in one go, and sends the Bitcoin straight to your wallet. Our OTC Desk works this way, with one senior contact.
- Bitcoin ATMs. Fine for small amounts, but at 6% to 15% or more in fees they are the most expensive way to buy a large amount.
What to have ready
- Government photo ID, and for larger amounts, information about where the funds come from. Canadian rules require us to verify clients, and it is faster when you have the documents ready.
- A wallet you control. For larger amounts, consider a hardware wallet; see our guide to self-custody for larger holdings.
- How you want to pay: bank wire or bank transfer, arranged with the desk.
How it works with us
Book a call with the OTC Desk. We confirm your identity and what you want to do, quote a price for your size, settle the trade, and send the Bitcoin directly to your own wallet. We never hold it for you.
Questions
Is there a maximum I can buy?
There is no fixed maximum through the OTC Desk. We size the trade with you and quote a price for the whole amount.
Will I get a better price than on an exchange?
For larger amounts, a single quoted price often costs less overall than buying in pieces, once slippage and repeated fees are counted. We show you the full price before you agree.
Do you hold my Bitcoin?
No. It goes straight to a wallet you control.
