How to spot a Bitcoin scam call | The Coin Shack

How to spot a Bitcoin scam call

  • Nobody real asks to be paid in Bitcoin: not the CRA, police, your bank or a utility.
  • If someone says "keep this secret" or stays on the phone while you pay, it is a scam.
  • Hang up. Call us or a family member.

Step by step

  • Someone calls or messages you and asks you to buy Bitcoin and send it to them? Hang up.
  • They say they are the CRA, police, your bank, a lawyer or a relative in trouble? Hang up and call the real number yourself.
  • They tell you to keep it secret, or stay on the line while you go to a Bitcoin ATM? That is always a scam.
  • They ask for your backup words or to control your computer? Never. Hang up.
  • Call us or a family member before you send anything. We are happy to check, any time.
  • Already sent money? Call us, then the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre: 1-888-495-8501.

Stuck?

We will never ask you to send Bitcoin to anyone. If someone says they are from The Coin Shack and asks for that, it is not us.
