Bitcoin ETF or Owning Bitcoin Directly? A Canadian Comparison | The Coin Shack

Bitcoin ETF or owning Bitcoin directly?

In Canada you can get Bitcoin exposure through an ETF in your brokerage account, or own Bitcoin directly in a wallet you control. Both are legitimate. They suit different people.

TL;DR

  • ETF: easy in your brokerage account, but a yearly fee and you own fund units, not Bitcoin.
  • Owning it directly: no yearly fee, full control, but you must keep the keys safe.
  • Many people do both. Ask your financial advisor; this is not investment advice.
  • Want to own it directly? Our OTC Desk quotes larger amounts and helps set up safe storage.

A Bitcoin ETF

You buy units through your brokerage, possibly inside a registered account. The fund holds the Bitcoin and charges a yearly management fee. You never handle keys, and you cannot send the Bitcoin anywhere: you own units of a fund, not Bitcoin itself.

Owning Bitcoin directly

You buy Bitcoin and it goes to a wallet you control. There is no yearly fund fee, and you can hold it, send it or pass it on. In exchange, you are responsible for keeping the keys safe; see self-custody for larger holdings.

Which one suits you

  • Prefer a familiar brokerage account and no key management: an ETF may suit you.
  • Want to own the asset itself, avoid ongoing fund fees and keep full control: direct ownership may suit you.
  • Many people do both. Ask your financial advisor how either fits your plan; this is not investment advice.

Buying directly in larger amounts

If you choose to own Bitcoin directly, our OTC Desk quotes a price for the full amount and helps you set up secure custody.

Questions

Is a Bitcoin ETF the same as owning Bitcoin?

No. You own units of a fund that holds Bitcoin. You cannot withdraw or send the Bitcoin.

Are there ongoing fees for owning Bitcoin directly?

No yearly fund fee. You pay the trading fee when you buy or sell, and network fees when you move it.

Which is safer?

Each has different risks. ETFs depend on the fund and its custodian; direct ownership depends on how well you protect your keys.
